I travel all over DFW for photo sessions, from downtown Dallas to Downtown Fort Worth and just about everywhere in between. But when it comes to grass and tress, my favorite place is right here in Keller.
It's Big Bear Creek park, right behind Keller Town Hall and The Keller Pointe. Its literally perfect all year long and I love that its close and convenient to not only Keller, but Denton and Grapevine and Fort Worth. And a huge bonus that the traffic is better than either of the big cities.
So as you can see from the images the park is gorgeous. But let me tell you a little bit about why I like it.
Its perfect year round
Its never out of season. So yes, this is Texas and we do have some extreme weather. The grass is not always green. In fact one could probably argue its brown more than it is green throughout the year, and they would probably be right. But grass doesn't need to be green to photograph well. Long dead grass is actually really pretty! Especially if it matches your seasonal clothing.
But if green grass is your preference, its got that too! In the spring the grass gets insanely tall, like shoulder height. Its this beautiful meadow feeling place just right here behind the city government. Seems crazy right! And if you catch it at the right time, usually April and May, you will have wildflowers. There are not bluebonnets, but there is just about every other variety scattered throughout the field.
The sunset
The sun sets right behind the tree line, and if you are not familiar with how lighting affect photography, let me just tell you that this is the secret sauce. Its the perfect ending to your session, and it just casts a beautiful golden glow across the entire field. I don't really need to say much else, just about every image on this page was shot around sunset.
And for my early birds, its actually great at sunrise too! The thing about the field is that its lined all the way around, so we can catch a great sunrise that feels the same as sunset. And I know early doesn't always sound like fun, but trust me, if you are looking for a summer session, I highly recommend you try a sunrise session. Its is so much cooler and definitely better. And even when its rough, coffee will be there for you.
Lots of Variety
So yes, its a big field. And when I say big, its really big. I am not the only photographer that knows about this park and even on its most crowded day, we can stay away from others. Which is perfect. But in addition to the big field, there are tree lined walking trails, a pond, a creek, a bridge. And its close enough to Town Hall and the Keller town center, we can shoot 2 kinds of look. I often start at town hall and make my way around the town center and into the park. We never even have to move the car!
Its huge
Like yes, we don't HAVE to move the car.....but we absolutely CAN. Bear creek park stretches from the KYA baseball fields all the way down to Keller Smithfield activity node. I think its technically like 3 different parks but they do all connect. And I have shot near every end multiple times and I still manage to find new, cool spots I didn't know about. I love finding a new pocket of trees or a trail I hadn't seen before. I always plan my shoots around the light, and having so many options really gives us a lot to work with.
So when I tell you I LOVE this park in Keller, I really mean it! We do not have to sit in hours of traffic to get a cool and fun shot. And having a shorter commute means that you can spend more time getting ready! And in the history of being a woman, I have never once turned town MORE time to get ready.
