You session day is approaching, you have your outfits picked out, but you might be wondering if there is anything else you need to bring. Well, yes, there is! And I am here to help you with that list. Some things are probably obvious, but others may not be. I want you to have the best session and that starts with being prepared.
Your outfits
I mean, I don't really know that I need to explain this one, obviously you need the clothes you want to wear in you photos. If you have had a hard time deciding on which outfits you want, bring them all! We may not get to every outfit, but having options onsite is very useful. Sometimes there is a shirt or dress that would be perfect for a backdrop. And you know, some days you just might be feeling one outfit more than another, it happens. Make sure everything you bring is steamed or ironed and left on the hanger. Wrinkled clothes are a big no no, and keeping them hung is important so you don't have to steam them again. Its also really helpful to have your entire outfit on 1 hanger if possible, so pants and shirts together, or at the very least rubber band them together. Its a small thing but makes prepping and changing on sit so much easier and faster. You don't want to be thumbing through all your shirts to find the one you wanted to go with your favorite jeans. Trust me its small but makes a big difference.
Undergarments
Make sure you plan accordingly! If you have a strapless bra if you need it, and appropriate underwear. You don't want seams showing or colors peaking through. And if you need shapewear bring it! Shapewear is for women of all sizes, so grab a pair of skims and you will be amazed at how great you clothes look on.
Shoes
You will need shoes for your outfits, its perfectly acceptable to have a different pair of shoes for each outfit. Its also perfectly acceptable if you have 1 pair of shoes that goes with all of your outfits. Its all about your style, so don't forget to pack them with your outfits. But you also need a pair of comfortable walking shoes. We spend a lot of time walking and if you only brought heels you will be miserable by the end. If your session is at the park, I suggest something closed toed like tennis shoes. There is usually tall grass, ant hills and other random nature things its good to have your feet covered. If you're in an urban area, birks or sandals are totally fine. Just something thats easy to walk in and won't leave blisters.
Accessories
I recommend planning jewelry for every single outfit, even if you're not big into jewelry it really completes the outfit. It doesn't need to be anything crazy and over the top, but just something to bring it together. Besides jewelry, I suggest bringing a hat, sunglasses, jackets and maybe even a purse. These little things are great to add interest and variety to your outfits without being a full commitment like a wardrobe change
Touch up Makeup
Regardless of if you did your makeup yourself or you hired my hair and makeup artist, you should have touch ups on hand. I always suggest translucent powder and lip color at a minimum. If you are worried about your makeup running, bring your whole makeup bag! I have never experienced a session where we needed a full face touch up, but it can be hard to predict what you might need. I suggest things to touch up your complexion (canceler, foundation, powder, bronzer, blush and highlighter). Eye makeup is likely to stay put, but you could bring a brush if you are worried about creasing and want to be extra prepared.
Hair Products
Hair spray and shine spray are a great idea! You probably already have more hairspray than you are used to, but if your hair starts to fall because of the heat or humidity, this can help save it! The shine spray will help tame the frizz and bring some life back into your hair. It can also refresh and tame curls that have gotten a little bit out of control. Its also helpful to have hair ties, claw clips or scrunchies if you want to try and new style mid way though.
Props
This list could get long, there are so many options when it comes to props you could fill an SUV. I don't actually recommend doing that, but if you have some props you want in your senior pictures, be sure to bring them! Here are a few ideas of things you can bring
- Your class year banner
- Letter jacket
- Instrument
- Your favorite book(s)
- Cap and Gown
- Flowers
- Sports equipment
- Team uniform
- Your car
- College pendant
- Class ring
I encourage you to bring something that represents your time in high school or a hobby that has a big role in your life.
Water and Snacks
Water is a must! You need to stay hydrated and feeling good and water is essential to that, preferably something with a straw so you don't lose you lip color, but whatever you have works. I also suggest you pack a light snack. Nothing messy or that will leave bits in your teeth. Just something so you don't get too light headed or worn out. A protein bar, grapes, rice cakes, or even a protein shake can help give you enough energy to finish your session strong and not super tired.
I hope this helps as you prepare for your senior session. All of my clients get a checklist. before their session so they don't have to refer to this post over and over again.
