I love Grapevine Lake. I know it may not be the biggest, or the cleanest, and its always crowded, but its my small little paradise in the middle of suburbia. My family owns a boat, and the hours spent tubing, swimming and finding beaches in the middle of the lake are countless. I love spending time there, its a little vacation in the midst of reality. I knew I wanted my first class of 2018 senior model session to take place at Grapevine Lake.
I won’t lie and say this is actually a labor day themed session, it was actually taken to kick off the summer, but I found it appropriate to share now that summer is coming to an end. I don’t know why, but Labor Day always feels like the end of the season. I mean there are MANY more hot days before fall arrives, and school started as long as 3 weeks ago, so I have no idea why this particular holiday seems to symbolize the end, but it does. When I think of summer, I think of water and sun, and what better way to showcase that then at the lake I love so much?
I am so excited about my class of 2018 models, they are so much fun! We had a blast at this session no doubt, many laughs and smiles were had. Its so great to see a group of girls become instant friends, even though they have never met before. Thats exactly what happened on this exciting day back in May.
We started with hair and makeup by my favorite beauty ladies at Kiss and Makeup. Micaela and her team never cease to disappoint and its always better than I imagined. I specifically requested the fishtail braid and I love it so much, its my boho flair I guess. We actually ended up short 1 girl (look for her model session on the blog soon) due to illness. So we finished with hair and makeup a little earlier than expected. I had the perfect spot in mind, still on Grapevine Lake, but it turned out to be a complete and total dud. So I went to one of my trusty favorites, Katie’s Woods. I am so happy my models were flexible to move the session further than expected because I don’t know that this location could have been more perfect.
But…finishing makeup early, we were left with LOTS and LOTS of sunlight. If you have seen my website and portfolio, you know I love that beautiful soft flattering light. You find that light the last hour of the day, on overcast days, or with what photographers call open shade (which really just means shade but its still bright). Fashion Photography has used harsh lighting and full sun forever so I was really excited to take on this challenge. It was late enough in the day I could position the girls with the sun at their backs, used a scrim when needed and a couple just full on facing the sun! I really had a good time and I love the way these images turned out and fun to try something different.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day to finish the summer, even if you don’t get to spend it at the lake.
