Urban Senior Portraits| Downtown Fort Worth | Sara

I definitely had a rush of urban senior portrait sessions this past school year. I am not sure if its a new trend, or luck of the draw, but either way I loved every minute of it. When I met Sara and her mom, they both knew immediately they wanted an urban styled session. She spent most of her life in New York, and the burbs of DFW, while fun and family friendly are quite different from the Big Apple. We tossed around the idea of Dallas, it has more of a big city feel compared to Fort Worth, but living in the funky town zip code, we ultimately settled on Fort Worth as that more closely captures her senior experience. Its our town!

One of the favorite spots downtown is the water gardens. Its so gorgeous, but I’ll be honest, lighting is HARD! Its completely open, no shade and the sun sets opposite the best side to photograph on. We lucked out in that there was some great cloud cover! I think her romper complimented the scenery perfection, with the right amount of color to compliment and add some contrast. Its hard to imagine, but outfit choice is so, so important when it comes to planning your session. Just imagine how awkward a dance uniform or prom dress would look here? But don’t worry, I help all my clients choose the best outfits for our location.

One of my favorite things about shooting in any city, is the variety it offers. There are so many different colors and textures, we can get so many different looks within close proximity. Would you believe the romper outfit and purple one were shot within a couple block of each other? Crazy right?

So if you are a native Texan, you know our weather is quite insane. And for me, my senior session can be quite a challenge to plan around. Summer is too hot, fall is too crazy with football, and while I have yet to have a client that actually plays football, it impacts cheer, band, dance, and more. Winter is cold and everything is dead, so thats out. And that basically leaves me with a lot of girls that need senior photos a month or two before they graduate. So thats a long winded explanation, to say, we planned Sara’s session for the exact weekend of Main Street Arts Festival. Now, I considered this when we were talking, but I honestly had NO IDEA it would be completely insane to be downtown, in the plaza, at the same time. I thought my long lens and creative angle would work just like it always has. I was wrong. But thats part of the fun of being a creative, we sometimes need a good challenge.

It was important to Sara to get a rooftop image. Fort Worth doesn’t have the picturesque skyline that NYC has, or even Dallas for that matter, but I think it gives the perfect look and replicates exactly what she was hoping to achieve. We saved this shot until the near end for that gorgeous golden sunset. And on the way out, we did a couple in the parking garage stairs. I would have never thought to shoot in the stairwell of a parking garage until I walked though it. I LOVED these ones, they might even be my favorite from the entire session!
